Health officials receive calls of 'swimmer's itch'
Precautions should be taken to shower immediately after leaving the water. If this can’t be done, a vigorous toweling often will remove the larvae that caused the reaction. Anyone having symptoms of swimmers itch should contact their family physician for treatment. Those affected may find relief through topical anti-itch and antihistamine lotions. The condition is not contagious, and the rash usually will subside within a week. A small mark, characteristic of a bruise, may remain for a short period after the rash disappears. Usually one to two weeks of 80 degree-plus weather will warm the lake waters sufficiently to complete the cycle of larvae that causes the itch, thus eliminating the problem for the rest of the summer. However, alternating warm and cool days may extend the period of time the larvae organisms are in the water. Swimmers may wish to temporarily avoid potentially effected lake waters until water temperatures have warmed sufficiently to reduce the larvae population. -->All comments will be reviewed prior to being posted. Swimmer's Itch is a temporary skin irritation you may get after swimming in a pond, lake, river, or ocean. It is caused by a parasite . On or near the water, there may be snails that are infected with the parasite. The snails pass the parasite on to the birds living near the water. Sometimes the parasite contacts humans who are swimming in the water. The itching usually happens after the contaminated water has dried from the skin. The itching may begin within a few hours of swimming or not until a day or two later. The itch and rash may last just a few hours or several days. It is unusual for the symptoms to last longer than a week. However, if you scratch too much, you may break the skin making you susceptible to infection. If your skin becomes infected, there may be more redness and pain at the site and sometimes crusting or pus on the skin.
