Hook, line & sinker: Free fishing weekend gets underway

Free Fishing Weekend starts Thursday and with it comes Saturday’s huge kid’s fishing clinic and derby at Miller Park in Bloomington.

About 400 kids and adults attended last year’s event hosted by the McLean County Sportsmen’s Association, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Bloomington Parks and Recreation, State Farm Foundation, the McLean County Sheriff’s Department and The Pantagraph.

The derby is for kids 5-12. Registration starts at 8 a.m. The first 200 kids receive T-shirts. Bring a bucket and your fishing gear. Worms and a lunch at noon are provided. The pond is stocked with catfish prior to the event. Call 309-275-9891 for information.

Free Fishing Weekend goes through Monday. Fishing licenses are not required anywhere in the state.

It’s also National Fishing and Boating Week, just so you know.

Fishing Fair

The 20th anniversary of the free Two Rivers Family Fishing Fair at Pere Marquette State Park is also Saturday. The Event features fishing fun and educational activities for the entire family from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Pere Marquette State Park is located along Illinois 100 in Grafton. The event is hosted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge.

Tournament notes

Catching up on happenings after a week of vacation:

-- Jake Bouldin won the Bloomington Normal Bass Club Schrock Repair tournament at Lake Jacksonville on Saturday with four fish weighing 14.11 pounds, including big bass of 5.33 pounds.

-- Brother Team of Randy and Rob Hakes won the recent Rapala Ever-Bloom Tournament Trail presented by Sam Leman Automotive Group at Evergreen Lake with three fish of 10.68 pounds.

-- Jerry Martoglio won the Bloomington Normal Bass Club tournament at Lake Shelbyville recently with 8.70 pounds.

-- Jack Menssen and Jason Estes won the Tuesday night BN Bass Club event at Evergreen Lake last week with four bass of 11.92 pounds.

-- The team of Scott Bree and Jamie Maisenbacher and the solo fisherman Jim Sherman tied for first place at the Tuesday Night Tournament this week at Lake Evergreen with 10 pounds, 9 ounces of fish. Big bass was 3 pounds, 10 ounces caught by Adam Stark and Rod Wallace.

-- Domenic Theison of Mackinaw and Tom Cassel of Danvers won the Bass 25 Peoria Banner Marsh open Saturday with six bass weighing 16.7 pounds, including big bass of 5.65 pounds.

“It’s a stamp of approval, it’s something that says this agency, Bloomington Parks and Recreation, knows what they’re doing, and they do it well,” said Renneisen.

The department he oversees met all 36 required standards and recently received official notification of the accreditation. The department went through a stringent process and evaluation.

“It measures things along the lines of do you have risk management policies, personal policies,” he said. “It also measures a number of other things related to facility management and operations, and professionalism.”

The department sent out 3,000 interest surveys to Monroe County residents to help them determine areas that needed improvement.

Shameka Neely, a native of Nashville, Tennessee enthusiastically joined WTIU as Senior Reporter/ InFocus Producer in the news department. Shameka previously worked at Western Kentucky University located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, as Coordinator for Minority Student Recruitment. In past years she has also, hosted a Public Affairs show entitled New Horizons at the ABC affiliate in Bowling Green. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational and Corporate Communication, with a minor in Marketing and Masters of Arts Degrees’ in Administrative Dynamics and Communication all from Western Kentucky University. She is also a proud member of Gamma Beta Phi, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
