John Coltrane's Long Island Ranch House on Endangered List
The Long Island home where John Coltrane penned his iconic “A Love Supreme” is one of America’s most endangered historic sites, according to the annual list released by the National Trust for Historic Preservation Wednesday.
Jazz great Coltrane purchased the modest 1950s Dix Hills ranch home in 1964 and lived there until he died in 1967. He transformed the basement into a recording and rehearsal studio and converted a guest room into a composition space. His wife Alice Coltrane lived in the home until 1973.
Though the space is more artistically than architecturally significant, a local organization that owns the vacant home aims to restore it as an education center. However, the home has fallen into disrepair and it needs mold remediation, repairs and conservation.
For 24 years, the National Trust, a non-profit organization that advocates for preservation of historic sites, has selected one-of-a-kind landmarks that it feels are worth saving. Of the 233 sites selected, only a handful have been lost, officials say.
Other endangered sites on this year’s list include:
Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago, Ill. – The concrete and glass cloverleaf-shaped structure was designed to facilitate interaction between patients and staff. It could be demolished. Pillsbury “A” Mill in Minneapolis – Once considered the world’s largest and most advanced flour mill complex, this mill closed in 2003 and is now vacant. The site fell into foreclosure and could be broken up for redevelopment. National Soldiers Home Historic District in Milwaukee – This home offered refuge for generations of American veterans, but deferred maintenance has left historic buildings unused and on the verge of collapse. Isaac Manchaster Farm in Avella, Pa. : This 400-acre farm with a stately brick Georgian manor house and historic outbuildings has housed eight generations of one family. It is threatened by longwall coal mining. Greater Chaco Landscape in New Mexico : These Native American archaeological and cultural sites that help unlock the mysteries of the prehistoric Chacoan people are threatened by increased oil and gas exploration and extraction. The Ranch House - News

That means your 1960 ranch house on the "new" east side of Petaluma now qualifies as an honest-to-goodness historical home. And if your little slice of the postwar American dream is beautifully preserved or restored, it could be a contender for a 2011
Game ranches would be required to pay fees for inspections, testing, applications and other procedures. Swine would have to be kept within secure fences. Different versions of the regulations have been proposed in the House and Senate. Rep.

Helen Schwab: Ranch House has closed
My mom and dad used to go there on Friday and Saturday nights and eat out with friends. My mother would bring home the menus for display on our kitchen wall. I have several of them, one has Shrimp Cocktale at $1.65. I believe it was from 1964. I took my husband there not long after we started dating for a really good steak. The Ranch House, like the Copal Grill, will always be some of my favorite meal memories!
My mom and dad used to go there to eat out with friends. My mom would bring home the menus for display on our kitchen wall. I still have several of them. The oldest, circa 1964, says, " shrimp cocktale $1.65." I still make cocktail sauce that will open your sinuses. I took my husband there when we started dating for a really good steak. Like the Copal Grill, the Ranch House will always be in my favorite meal memories!
O-o-h-h-h no! My husband and I were saying just last weekend that we needed to go to the Ranch House soon. What a shame it's not going to be part of our culinary landscape anymore (and I can just see some of the foodie snobs turning their noses up -- but this was one of Charlotte's first steak houses and deserves a place in the hall of fame). I can remember when I first moved to Charlotte as a child in 1968... my dad's workplace was not far down the street and he would take us there from time to time. But we resdiscovered this little gem again about 15 years ago and lovingly referred to it as "the steak house that time forgot" with it's 50's wagon wheel and barrel keg decor. The steaks were wonderful but my fave was the salmon --huge portions that were way less expensive than most places. Our granddaughter was just a couple of months old the first time we took her there. We went for special occasions and just because. Oh, we're so going to miss this place. What a sad day...
What a sad day. The Ranch House will always have a big space in my memory bank. My mother met my grandparents for the first time there in 1958, and my wife met my parents for the first time there in 2003. My wife and I also got engaged there. You could always count on getting a great steak, outrageous cocktail sauce, and homemade blue cheese dressing, served by really nice ladys that took great pride in doing a job so many disrespect these days. You will be missed old friend.
This just really makes me sad. I have been a customer of the Ranch House for 25 years. My fiance' and I live in Cleveland County, and any time we come to Charlotte we would stop by the RH JUST to get a shrimp cocktail and a beer. We would also get a pint of their FABULOUS cocktail sauce to go as it is the best I have ever tasted....BAR NONE!! The steaks were like no other I have ever had and we even compare every other steak to the ones served at the RH. This restaurant's food was hard to beat and the atmosphere is so relaxing. We will miss the special ladies who worked there. I'm so sad to see them go. It was one of a kind and probably the last of it's kind. What a sad day for Charlotte and all who love good food.
Saw the old homstead on Ranch House Rd. Looks different as a duplex.
