Memorial Day was set aside to remember those who served and sacrificed, but it's also become the unofficial start of summer.
Here's a user guide to the long holiday weekend in and around San Diego.
Travel factsAbout 2.62 million Southern California residents are expected to take overnight getaways at least 50 miles from home — a slight increase from last year.
Most local travelers – 2.2 million – will go by car, largely unchanged from 2010.

At the beachLifeguard staffing will increase at beaches. Large crowds are expected even though weather conditions may not be ideal.
Imperial Beach lifeguard Capt. Robert Stabenow says it’s a dangerous time of year because the ocean floor is still uneven from winter storms.
Ocean temperatures are about 60 to 63 degrees. No large swells are expected.
San Diego lifeguard Lt. John Everhart advised beachgoers to swim in an area that is supervised by lifeguards; ask lifeguards about the safest places to swim; parents need to supervise their children; and swimmers should refrain from drinking alcohol.
In the bays, boaters need to know water rules and regulations and use common sense in terms of speed, since “boats don’t have brakes,” Everhart said.
