— Shade is welcome around the landscape these days. Trees in West Texas prove their worth in a summer like this.It is alarming to see the number of trees, old and new, that are suffering, stressing and beginning to decline.
If we are going to devote any water or management to the landscape, two places of importance are trees and the home's foundation.
The foundation of homes can shift from the shrink and swell of soil resulting from the wet and dry difference. Clay soils have much more elasticity and shrink during dry periods and can cause the shifting of both concrete slabs and piers on pier and beam structures. Results can be structural issues such as cracks in walls, doors that won't close well and a worst-case scenario of slabs and floors developing cracks.
This is one of the major reasons we design shrub beds and borders around homes to keep the foundation evenly moist when we water the plants. In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the soils have ultrahigh shrink/swell and it is a must to keep the area around the home from developing dry cracks.
Soaker hoses or drip irrigation tubing are a convenient and efficient method of applying water in long, narrow patterns that can encircle a building or apply water to linear shrub beds.
Under extremely dry and hot conditions, watering foundations in clay soil at least once every three weeks is necessary. In the absence of rain running off the roof, these areas next to the home may not be moist enough to keep soils hydrated and expanded.

Leaf canopies are thinning because of leaves dropping as a self-defense mechanism to insufficient water. Trees with thinned leaf canopies can get sunscald from the exposure to sun and temperatures well above 100 degrees. On days that air temperature rises above 100 and bark is exposed to full sun, temperatures of the tree bark can reach 125 degrees and above.
