You mentioned that the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus is lower in the area in which you work compared to the oceanic average. Is this due to a biological process? I mean, does the ratio of phosphorus to nitrogen determine which microbes are present, or do the organisms manipulate the ratios to create this environment for themselves?
— Megan Banner, Kingston, R.I. This is a difficult question that oceanographers are actively studying. The nitrogen to phosphorus ratio (N:P) in the ocean is determined by the organisms that live there and water movement between the ocean basins. The N:P ratio, in turn, can influence which organisms are present. In the eastern tropical South Pacific, N:P is low because denitrifying bacteria remove nitrogen without also removing phosphorus. However, the low nitrogen to phosphorus ratio that is set up by this process probably also influences which photosynthetic organisms, requiring nitrogen and phosphorus, live in the surface waters. This is a great question about the possibility of hydrothermal vents as sources of nitrogen to the deep ocean. In general, hydrothermal vent fluids have very low concentrations of dissolved nitrogen compounds. Vent systems near coasts, however, have measurable concentrations of nitrogen. These emissions are small relative to total nitrogen inputs to the ocean, likely accounting for less than 1 percent. Ben raises a good point about what the ecosystem level effects of an imbalanced nitrogen budget would be. As I pointed out in my first post , the apparent budget imbalance in the nitrogen cycle is probably a result of bad accounting, rather than an actual imbalance in nitrogen inputs and losses in the ocean. An analogy might be your own bank account. Just because the balance in your account is staying constant, it is still helpful to know when and how much money is coming in and going out. Nitrogen inputs and losses in the ocean appear to have been balanced through most of the geologic record, so we don’t really know what the consequences of a grossly imbalanced budget would be. “Some estimates of the amount of nitrogen leaving the ocean exceed estimates of the amount of nitrogen coming in by several hundred teragrams (that’s one billion kilograms) per year.” This is a meaningless figure without context. Considering that the estimated amount of ocean water is several hundred quintillion (quintillion = 1 million x 1 trillion) gallons, ’some estimates’ (whatever that means) are in the order of magnitude of 1 gram nitrogen deficit per million gallons of water, or if you prefer, in the range of 0.25 parts per billion. Kudos on studying the marine nitrogen cycle, but please use more meaningful numbers to illustrate your point.
