NEW BEDFORD

alternative service and picnic: St. Martin's Episcopal Church parking lot of the Thrift Shop, corner of County and Rivet streets, Saturday, June 25, 5 p.m. The relaxed, alternative service with the Rev. Richard Clark as celebrant, will be followed by picnic featuring hot dogs, chips and soda. All are welcome. Bring a friend and a lawn chair, although they do have folding chairs. In case of rain, event will be held in Parish House.

bible prophecy conference: Dartmouth Bible Church, 52 Morton Ave., Tuesday, July 19, 7 p.m.; Wednesday, July 20 and Thursday, July 21, 6:30 p.m. Conference will feature special guest teacher Dr. Jimmy De Young, whose focus will be on understanding the Middle East and current events in the light of an evangelical understanding of Bible prophecy. bikes not bombs donation: Congregational Church of South Dartmouth, 17 Middle St., Saturday, June 18, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. They will be collecting used bicycles on behalf of Bikes Not Bombs. These bicycles will be trucked to Boston where they will be repaired or separated into components. Boston teens who work on the bikes have a chance to build their own bike in return for their labor. The majority of rebuilt bikes and components are shipped to countries in Africa or Central America. There, the used bikes are sold very cheaply by bike shops enabled by Bikes Not Bombs. Bike shops create jobs in sales and repair, and the buyers get affordable bikes, improving their quality of living. U.S. donors of the bikes benefit by keeping their bikes out of landfills, earning a tax deduction and receiving the satisfaction of providing an inexpensive, ecological form of transportation in developing countries.
