A recent study by the Texas Department of Transportation gives Harris County high marks in something no resident should be proud of: the two most dangerous highways for teenage drivers in the state of Texas are found in the county. They are Interstate 45 and Interstate 10, with several other Houston-area highways making the study's top 15 list.
The study examined statewide accident figures from 2006 through 2010. TxDOT found that there were 3,091 car accidents involving teenage drivers on the stretch of I-45 that runs through Harris County. That was by far the highest figure of any road in the given time frame. Coming in second was I-10 with 1,910. According to a story by KHOU-TV, several other area highways figured into the top 15 of the study's list. They included the 610 Loop, FM 1960 and Highway 59.
Anyone familiar with a teenage driver is perhaps not surprised at the high rate of car accidents. Many of the drivers themselves would not be. KHOU-TV interviewed one teenager who is trying to change the trend of young drivers acting recklessly behind the wheel. She was part of a group of teenage filmmakers that produced a 30-minute video called Chronicles of a Teen Killer. Recently posted on YouTube, the video aims to show young drivers the potential consequences of driving drunk .
The teen hoped that the video, which was made with the help of the Houston Police Department and the Houston Galveston Area Council, would shake teen drivers' beliefs that a serious car accident cannot happen to them. While drunk driving does not necessarily account for all of the accidents, reducing teenage DUIs would go a long way to bringing down the numbers.
