Pride 2011 : Local Acts

Can you believe it’s been a whopping 365 days since Portland Pride? It seems like just yesterday—the parades (people and pets alike), the parties, the performances. The pomp, the prancing, the prettiness (yeah, you, and your little dog, too).

Yet here we are, a whole 24 hours before the gates open at Tom McCall Waterfront Park. At press time, specifics were still trickling in from organizers at Pride Northwest. So we’ve done our darndest to furnish you with the most complete information for the festivities, including Main and Community Stage schedules, details on the Dyke March and Pride Parade, profiles of featured entertainers and more.

And because Pride isn’t just about the park, we’re following up on the initial coverage of our June 3 issue with a fully updated calendar of events, both established and late-breaking, and continuing our “PrideFiles” of folks and organizations in the community worth getting to know. We’re also thinking outside of the weekend, and city limits, with a preview of statewide celebrations scheduled throughout the summer. The only thing we haven’t thought of is the weather—and well, we’ve thought of it, and continue to. Good thoughts, people. All together now, good thoughts.

They craft songs about gay historical figures such as Kenneth Anger, Charles Darwin and Alexander the Great. They put on events at Crush via an artist residency. They’re performing on the Pride festival main stage. They are Mattachine Social.

“Kids don’t know gay history,” says Andrew Klaus, 32, of the band’s moniker. “Hence the name Mattachine Social, after the Mattachine Society.” He’s referring to one of the earliest gay rights activist groups, founded in 1950. In the same breath it takes to describe Mattachine Social, Klaus mentions Charles Darwin, “who was kicked off the [HMS] Beagle on the Galapagos Islands for having an affair with the captain’s son.

In any event, proving that you maintained status does not require showing all old I-94s. You need to show that you were approved for or admitted in a certain status, and that you stayed in that status until it was changed or extended. Approval notices, visas, and maybe entry stamps from your passport re usually enough, and just the most recent I-94. That means if the PO is valid for 4 monnths one gets H1 extn for 4 months only and if it 6 mths then extension for only 6 months. This means that after 4,6 months one again has to apply for H1/H4 extensions and again pay all those fees. I have been working in US continously since May 2003. I have not committed a single crime other than an occasional traffic ticket. I have a fantastic work ethic and can give tons of references of clients and people who I have worked with. I have paid taxes at the rate 25% to 28% in the last 6 years. I pay property taxes. I have never missed or been late on a single credit card or rent or bill payment. I have excellent credit history.
