Wind power - Alstom takes the plunge with 6 MWe offshore launch.
Alstom, which became a player in the onshore wind turbine business in 2007 through its acquisition of Spanish turbine maker Ecotecnia, is now targetting the offshore wind business with the launch of a new 6 MW direct drive turbine - its first machine specifically for offshore applications.
Alstom and EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF-EN) have said that on the basis of this turbine they will bid jointly for projects under the recently launched 3 GW French offshore wind tender. The projects under this tender will cost around EUR10 billion and would be located at five sites on the country's northwest coast, Saint-Nazaire, Treport, Fecamp, Courseulles-sur-Mer and Saint-Brieuc. The French government intends to launch a second tender in the coming years, with the aim of having 6 GW of offshore wind capacity installed by 2020.
Two prototypes of the new machine will be installed in 2011 and 2012, one onshore and one offshore, followed by a pre-series installation in 2013 (the final rollout step before full commercialisation), with series production starting in 2014. Alstom hopes that this timetable will also put the new machine in the running for UK "Round 3" offshore projects.
Alstom is planning to collaborate with Belgian wind farm developer Belwind on the pre-series demonstration, as part of a 40 MW demonstrator project planned in Belgian waters at phase 2 of the Bligh Bank offshore wind farm. The plan is to obtain EU funding for this demonstrator project under the NER300 scheme.
The new 6 MW turbine - currently called the Eco-1xxM, the xx indicating that the rotor diameter, which is likely to be very large, has not yet been revealed - will employ the established Pure Torque rotor support technology, originally developed by Ecotecnia, and used in other machines in the Alstom portfolio. The aim of Pure Torque is to transmit bending loads to the support tower and to keep unwanted stresses away from from generator and drive components inside the nacelle. Only torque is transmitted to the generator, hence the name. The concept ensures sufficient air gap (about 10 mm) is maintained between the generator rotor and stator at all times, boosting performance and reliability. It also means that, because components in the nacelle do not have to be designed to contend with bending loads, they can be lighter. Furthermore very large blades, with their associated larger bending loads, can be accommodated.
The new turbine will employ a direct drive permanent magnet generator to be supplied by Converteam (which was part of Alstom until 2005, and is currently in the process of being acquired by GE).
