Twins to plant 2 trees from Target Field
The Minnesota Twins say they will plant the pair of black spruce Tuesday at St. Croix State Park in Hinckley. A brief ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. to mark the occasion.
The Twins have donated 10 of the 14 trees that used to stand behind the center field fence to Minnesota state parks.
Twins hitters complained that the trees hindered their ability to see the ball out of a pitcher's hand, so the Twins decided to take the trees down and plant them across the state.
Tuesday's planting is an extension of the "Break a bat, plant a tree" promotion. Each year 100 trees are planted for every bat broken by a Twins pitcher during the season.

Walk to the alley, where the pedestrian door to the garage is, and you find a lovely vignette of a Black Hills spruce, a little pocket of rock surrounding a yew and an iron planter holding a lime sweet potato vine and purple fountain grass.

That strategy preserved black spruce, the final stage of the boreal forest in many areas of the Interior. Black spruce waits out other tree species, pops up in the understory, grows slowly, and stays anchored in cool soil unless the forest burns,

Twins plant Inaugural Season black spruce tree at Zumbrota High School
Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN – The Minnesota Twins today (May 31, 2011) are transplanting one of the 14 black spruce trees from the Inaugural Season at Target Field to Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School in Zumbrota, Minn.
The tree will honor the memory of 2006 Zumbrota High School graduate Patrick Gadient, who was killed in a car accident on Feb. 3, 2011.
As part of the Minnesota Twins Season Ticket Holder loyalty program, “Sweet Spot,” Twins Season Ticket Holders had the opportunity to submit a video on why they deserve to have a black spruce tree from the Inaugural Season at Target Field.
Season Ticket Holder Dan Flaaen, who works at the school, submitted a video in honor of 2006 Zumbrota High School graduate Patrick Gadient.
Flaaen’s video detailed how Patrick enjoyed any activity that involved being outdoors – especially baseball, where he pitched and played first base for Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School. He had the opportunity to play at the Metrodome, twice, and was ecstatic to play on the same field as the Minnesota Twins.
The Target Field black spruce tree will be replanted in Patrick Gadient’s memory at Zumbrota High School. To view the winning video, visit http://minnesota.twins.mlb.com/min/ticketing/sth/gen/spruce_vote.jsp .
