Nintendo Wii U To Cause Wii Prices To Drop Even More?

The introduction of the new Wii U gaming console by Nintendo yesterday at the E3 gaming event is likely to cause retailers to clear out stocks of the existing five year old Nintendo Wii console by cutting prices and offering more enticing bundles.

The new Wii U gaming console features a new motion controller that comes with a 6.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, a number of motion sensors as well as analogue pads, a front facing camera, microphone and speaker.

We've already noted a significant drop in the price of the Wii in the retail, reconditioned and second hand markets with big players like Argos and Tesco slashing Wii prices as low as they can. It is not uncommon to find the Nintendo Wii base bundle for under £100 while its original recommended selling price was £180.

Specialist gaming retailers like Gamestation and Game have been selling pre-owned versions at around £50 for the past few weeks already. Nintendo hasn't announced the price of the Wii U yet but did say that it would be available for sale between April and December next year.

It must be noted though, that the price of official accessories like the Nunchuk or the Wii Board haven't undergone any significant drop in price, possibly because they will still be compatible with the Wii U.
