Marion citizens unhappy with change to monthly yard waste pickup

CITY PICKING UP YARD WASTE MONTHLY

Due to budget cuts, the city altered its yard waste program this year to once-a-month collections, according to the mayor's office. Yard waste will be collected these weeks:

» July 5 through July 8.

» Aug. 1 through Aug. 5.

» Sept. 6 through Sept. 9.

» Oct. 3 through Oct. 7.

The city will not pick up grass clippings at curbside. Branches must be bundled and cut in lengths no longer than 5 feet.

Curbside pickup for yard waste occurs on the business day following each resident's regular trash collection. A Friday trash pickup means a Monday yard waste pickup.

Residents may drop off grass clippings and yard waste materials free of charge at Park Enterprise Construction Co. Inc., 560 Barks Road W., from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Park Enterprise Construction will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

A photo identification with address is required for grass and yard waste drop-offs. Residents using plastic bags must remove waste from bags and retain the empty bags or discard them. Biodegradable paper bags are available at some local retail stores.

Contact Park Enterprise for program details or to verify hours at 740-223-7275.

For other information, call the city sanitation and streets department at 740-382-1479.

MARION - An accumulation of yard waste in some neighborhoods has prompted questions and criticism of the collection service provided by the city.

Service Director Jay Shoup said a change this year to a monthly pickup and a Saturday morning storm has slowed city sanitation crews' collection.

"The amount to pick up and storm damage as recent as Saturday morning on the south end," Shoup said. "It seems to be local, not a citywide thing."

Councilman James Gilsdorf, R-6th Ward and mayoral candidate, said at a recent council meeting that he has received complaints from residents in his ward about yard waste that is not been picked up.

He said in exploring the issue, he learned the city has limited its curbside pickup of residents' yard waste to once a month rather than once a week.

The Marion Star published a city announcement in late March that the city would make the change because of budget cuts, and Shoup said the city placed an announcement on its website, marionohio.us, three months ago.

He said the change to monthly collection will save the city $35,000 to $45,000 per year. The cost of providing the service will shrink from as much as $95,000 annually to as little as $50,000 annually, he estimated.

The main measures for solid waste treatment | my world

The main advantage of solid waste in ways as follows: ① the use of mineral waste for construction materials, road construction materials, padding materials, metallurgy, chemical industry and light industry and other industrial raw materials. ② The carbon, oil or other organic material to recover energy from waste. ③ use with soil, plant the required elements or compounds in the waste for soil amendment and fertilizer. ① the production process of reform, an emission reduction of waste: to improve product quality, production and long life products, the items will not quickly become waste. Use of fine materials, the production process to reduce the emissions. For example, in mineral processing operations, the increase in ore grade, plus a smaller slagging agents and coke, blast furnace slag to reduce emissions. Advanced industrial countries have adopted this method, the original blast furnace slag can reduce emissions more than half. ② Development of material recycling process: reform the traditional process, the development of material recycling technology, the first product to enable the production of waste, a second product of the raw materials, so that the production of waste products has become the second production of the third product raw materials, etc., and finally only a small amount of waste discharged into the environment, this can achieve economic, environmental and social aspects of the benefits. In order to protect the environment and the development of production, many countries continue to adopt new measures and new technologies to deal with and use of solid waste. Mining and stockpiling of waste from the low-lying land, the development of mining land rehabilitation, dam safety and so on. Industrial waste from the negative impact of keeping the development to utilization. Municipal waste from manual collection, transport development to mechanization, automation and pipeline transportation of collection; never control the landfill, the development of sanitary landfill, landfill recycling filter drain; from open burning and use of incinerators, the development of energy recovery incineration, pyrolysis, etc. in the mild, the development of high-pressure compression molding from compression molding. Urban organic waste and agricultural organic waste is also used for biogas energy recovery. Stockpiling of hazardous residue from the separation of industrial development to chemical fixation, chemical conversion to prevent contamination. The general trend is shifted from the active use of the negative disposition, to achieve the waste recycling. Sorting of municipal solid waste recycling. According to refuse the chemical, physical properties, such as gravity, electromagnetic, color, elasticity, flammability, etc. sorting, then dry, water, pulp, high temperature or the temperature decomposition approach, from recycled metal, glass, paper materials, plastics and other materials, while recycling heat and combustible gases.
