Blueberries and pancakes are summer orchard treat
Fresh blueberries and pancakes are a perfect match, and Trudie and Dana Reed combine them for their annual Blueberry Jubilee & Pancake Day.

Making decorating a piece of cake
Years ago, we learned to create lavish birthday cakes with fancy borders and colorful flowers in cake-decorating classes. Now we can do it with edible, flexible decorating paper.
Sugar Sheets, a new product from Wilton, requires no prep work, just scissors or paper punches. Simply cut free-hand shapes, such as bows and curlicues, or punch designs on the edible paper and then apply to butter-cream icing or fondant. The solid-colored, patterned or alphabet sheets cost $4 at craft stores or at Wilton.com.
Southern Living's barbecue app
Southern Living has a new app for barbecue lovers. The Big Book of BBQ app for the iPad is available for $7.99 through July 4 and then $12.99 thereafter on the App Store.
The app features more than 100 recipes and dozens of special tricks, tips and techniques headlined as: "Tips from the pitmaster," "Que and A" and "Tools of the trade."
Video and audio clips give step-by-step advice and how-to demos from award-winning barbecue chef Troy Black. I’ve made pancakes two times in my life. Once was around Thanksgiving a few years ago. I was given a small pumpkin as a birthday present (sounds weird, but I loved it) and it sat on our table for months until one Sunday morning, I made batter with them. And, I must say, they were some of the most seductive and wonderfully delicate pancakes I’ve consumed.
If this sounds at all dramatic, I should note that I’m not a huge pancake person. I certainly enjoy them, but I think that so many recipes rely too heavily on the assistance of maple syrup. Now, don’t get me wrong, I adore a good high-grade maple syrup, but why does something that should be delicious enough on its own need to be lathered in it?
But enough ranting and raving… let’s talk about the second batch of pancakes. On our way to the Cape a few weekends ago, we stopped off at Whole Foods to pick up some items for dinner and came across a bounty of relatively inexpensive blueberries that were just begging us to take them home. And we didn’t have it in our hearts to leave them behind.
The following morning, I popped open the refrigerator to find them sitting on the shelf, ready for consumption. The only proper use I could think of for these gloriously plump blueberries were to make pancakes. Rich, light, full of texture, bursting with flavor! I can’t think of a better breakfast than this.
