Lodi Fireman Wins TV Cooking Contest
LODI, Calif. -- A Lodi firefighter who regularly cooks for the crew at the citys Fire Station No. 1 is now the winner of the 24-Hour Restaurant Battle on TVs Food Network. Fireman Kris Graves and his twin brother prepared a dish that Graves called Seven-Spice Rubbed Pork Tenderloin with Spicy Cranberry Chutney, which he describes as being partly taken from cookbooks and partly his own creation. Graves, who said he has learned everything he knows about cooking from his mother, said he would donate a large portion of the $10,000 prize money to the Mama Bear Foundation, an organization founded in memory of Graves mother, who died of cancer. The organization raises money to support families battling the disease, Graves said. Graves and his family are lifelong cooks who try to outdo each other at Sunday dinners, he said. Graves grandparents used to own a diner in Santa Rosa, he said. It was Graves brother who got the attention of Food Network producers by emailing them some information about his family. The producers then invited the brothers to compete on the show, where they battled against a team of New York City firefighters.
