A few years ago I stumbled across a delightful find of an old and beloved pair of Raggedy Ann and Andy rag dolls. Reminiscing on the joy I experienced as a child with my own raggedies and their stories, I went searching for the books written between 1918 and 1938. What I found must have been stories written later by someone other than the original author, Johnny Gruelle. But they were ones I do remember reading as a young girl. This time around, however, I was uncomfortable by what I was reading, so much so I could not continue. Something about the underlying treatment of each character, the way they talked to each other and solved problems offended me. My values today clashed with those of the past.

Same thing is happening over the much loved and revered Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Some people today are expressing discomfort or downright offense by the use of an “n” word whose origin was as a type of cotton to describe a man with black skin. Our values today are clashing with those of the past.

Then there are the studies that have been done asking subjects to view a short video and then take part in an assigned task. One half of the subjects viewed a nature film and the other half a violent scene from a movie. Next, all subjects were told they must give a series of increasingly intense electric shocks to a person they could observe behind a one-way mirror. Time and again those who had viewed the violence were willing to give much stronger shocks to the hapless “victim” than those who had viewed the nature film.

What do these three things have in common? They all speak to the issue of how our experiences influence us. Our individual moral compasses are set and changed by what we read, what we watch, and how we talk to one another. It seems to me to be important that we monitor what we expose ourselves to so that we do not drift into a realm of values that are not healthy for us or for our communities.

The biblical Paul said it this way in his letter to believers in Philippi: “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious - the best, not the worst, the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you have learned, what you heard and saw and realized.

By most reasonable standards Senior Fitness is an exceptional book on health and fitness. Its basic message is simple and intellectually sound. The recommendations are based on both solid science (multiple studies with convergent findings) and the results of the author’s own heroic battle against cancer. On a personal level I found the book quite inspiring, providing just the impetus I needed to adjust my personal diet and exercise regimen. Dr. Heidrich doesn’t equivocate or offer us simplistic solutions that require no work on our part, but the reward of good health and a vigorous old age should more than justify our efforts. The message is clear, the science is sound and if you’re looking for a good book to jump start your own personal fitness program this is a great place to start.

This book–this author–has changed the lives of several people I know including my own. The information contained within far exceeded my expectations for this book. It should be read by everyone. I would have given it 10 stars if I could have.

You should know that you will not get this information from your doctor. Most doctors know very little about the impact of nutrition and exercise on the most common diseases since it has not been until recent times that nutrition and fitness has been taught in medical schools. I especially recommend it especially to people of any age who are trying to prevent or overcome cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, alzheimers, obesity.
