The minutes seem either agonizingly long or speed by too quickly when you are lying on a narrow bed in the surgical pre-op cubicle, anticipating the operating room staff will come any minute to wheel you into the OR for surgery.
For children, even older ones, the hours before surgery are especially unnerving. Not only do they fear the pain of pokes and prods while they are awake, they don't understand how they can sleep deep enough to not feel the surgeon cutting and worry they may not wake up at all.
“That's teens' biggest fear — that they're going to wake up during surgery,” said Tammy Else, the child life specialist at Lutheran Children's Hospital.
Child life specialists are highly trained and certified professionals who help children and youths cope with the spectrum of challenges faced during hospitalization, surgery, medical testing and any other psycho-social aspect of health care.
They don't do the surgery, give the shots or other medical procedures. But, thanks to them, doctors' and nurses' work is made easier and medical outcomes improved.
Michelle DeArmond of Fort Wayne is a nurse and has worked in several local hospitals.
She assumed when two of her children, Spencer, 7, and Lilly, 9, each faced a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in June, she would be able to answer most of their questions and allay their fears. But as the days drew closer to the surgery, she sensed they needed more than Mom's assurance.
She contacted Else, who gave the children a hospital tour and used a variety of “medical play” items to walk them through the various aspects of what was to come. Anatomically correct dolls that can be opened up to show removable organs and teddy bears and dolls on which intravenous lines can be inserted in the arms were among items in Else's “tool bag.”
“We help children understand why they get medications, pokes and tests.
