Two Sacramento County supervisors split on remap option

Supervisors of the County of Sacramento will be the first to run for re-election under the new district lines next year disagree on the redistricting proposals Tuesday.

The dispute came as supervisors discussed the proposed five cards from five supervisorial districts of the Board by the Department of the county voter registration and elections and a new card by a resident of Rancho Cordova.

Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan is opposed to a card promoted by Supervisor Susan Peters. MacGlashan and Peters will be up for re-election in April.

This map, proposed by Bernard Bowler, former president of the Chamber of Commerce Greater Sacramento, Folsom remove the district MacGlashan. MacGlashan said the loss of the city is the reason for his objection.

Peters likes the map, because it would give him some integrated zone. Most of his district, which runs primarily east of Sacramento, is unincorporated.

This adds to the workload of its staff, because residents have no other local government officials to ask for help, she said.

Politically, Peters may have the most to lose in the redistribution process, which takes place every 10 years to reflect population changes recorded in the U.S. census. Peters, a Republican, represents a constituency of the Democratic trend. It is the only official whose party is a minority in the neighborhood it represents.

MacGlashan is also a Republican, and his district was losing the Republicans.

His neighborhood is adjacent to the area of Peters, which means changes to the Republicans tend regions could influence the results of two of their next election.

Supervisors agreed Tuesday to eliminate three of the five cards drawn by the county, and to consider the two remaining along with the map of the bowler. The board will continue discussions on the cards and August 9 to approve a by November.

Supervisors said they wanted to remove the three cards, because they broke some communities. Officials of Rancho Cordova and other communities have told the county they want to be represented by a supervisor.

County to redraw the lines to 282 000 inhabitants in each district contain about, trying to keep different "communities of interest" intact. These communities can be reached by geography, sexual orientation or other things.

Trying to satisfy all communities will not be easy.

Tuesday, the mayor of Citrus Heights, the leaders of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and African-American community came out in support of a card, which remains under investigation. They said it would be in large part to protect the key communities in the same district.
