Breastfed babies have a lower risk of developing asthma and asthma-related symptoms in early childhood independent of infectious diseases and allergies, according to new research.

Using data collected from questionnaires research on the effect of duration of breastfeeding and the introduction of other liquid and solid foods in the 5368 case of children, researchers accumulated other data as if a child was breastfed during their first year, when a child stopped breastfeeding and when other types of milk and solids were introduced.

A separate questionnaire was sent when the children were aged 1, 2, 3 and 4, which focused on diseases and diseases associated with asthma symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough and persistent phlegm.

The results showed that, compared to breastfed infants during the first six months of age or older, children who were never breastfed had increased risk of wheezing, shortness of breath, dry cough and persistent in the phlegm their first four years. Specifically, children who were never breastfed had a risk 1.5 times higher phlegm and persistent risk 1.4 times more likely to wheeze.Be fed solids or other milk and breast milk during the first four months was associated with a higher risk of all symptoms related to asthma in the first four years of life compared to breast milk than in the first four months .

The researchers found that shorter duration and non-exclusivity of breastfeeding were associated with an increased risk of asthma symptoms related to preschool children. These associations seem at least partly explained by infectious, but not atopic mechanisms.

The team said their findings further support the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life.

The study was published in the European Respiratory Journal.
