President Jonathan's many headaches
Since his assumption of office as president on May 29, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has been having it rough. He has been facing many challenges, especially in the area of security. MOSES ALAO , in this analysis, looks at the challenges facing the president and how he could surmount them.
Some weeks ago, President Goodluck Jonathan, in his speech to the newly appointed ministers, not only quoted the salient lines of the late philosopher and social critic, Tai Solarin, he also set many minds on the depth of reason which lies in the words of the activist. President Jonathan had copiously borrowed from the lines of Solarin, saying to his ministers, “May your roads be rough.” By using the statement, President Jonathan attempted to acquaint his team with the herculean task of governance that their fatherland has bestowed on them.
Interestingly, the speech is an exact representation of his own situation and same should have been read to him on May 29 because never has any civilian president in the country been plagued with internal insecurity, crises, economic hardship and the like than President Jonathan, who can be said to be a man of courage.With the current development policy, it is perhaps not wrong to say that Jonathan President, with countless challenges facing him, the president may be the most controversial in this country lately, a situation that could make the success of his administration a well deserved one.
From his days as interim president, roads appear to have been filled with thorns policy. With the late former President Yar’Adua’s ailment that left Jonathan and in fact the country, in a limbo, and later led to his emergence as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the roads have been rougher than usual for him.
If anyone thought that his emergence as president would signal the end of his travails, such persons were proved wrong in the streets of Kaduna, Bauchi and Kano where post-elections violence quickly over-shadowed the widely acclaimed Nigerians’ love for Mr. President as demonstrated in the polls.
Having inherited several security threats, the widespread joy over the president’s victory, the acclaim of his matchless record of laying a solid foundation for electoral credibility coupled with his emergence as the first president from the South-south, were short-lived by the gross insensitivity displayed in the killing of corps members in Bauchi State.
