Cool Abdulghany delivers

After shooting a one-under-par 69 in the first round of the Costa Mesa Junior Championship Wednesday, Alyaa Abdulghany had someone very important to talk to before the final round.

The incoming seventh-grader at Corona del Mar Junior High had a short discussion with Alyaa Abdulghany.

"I just talked to myself to get myself calm," said Abdulghany, a 12-year-old who lives in Newport Beach. "All I said to myself was, 'calm down. You have another day."

Abdulghany calmly carded a one over 71 to finish at 140 and won, even girls of 12 and 14 Division of the annual golf 22 in Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club on Thursday.

She finished with four birdies during the two rounds combined on the grounds of Mesa Linda.

Abdulghany said she became very excited after his 69 in the opening round because it was the only woman golfer to go below normal in the three age categories of the event.

Winning the junior title Abdulghany Costa Mesa was the third straight win in the Southern California PGA Junior Tour, after taking first in the summer league championship and was Shorecliffs Heartwell.

She preferred the win in Costa Mesa because it was able to pass under the first day and stay calm during the final.

"I very well in this tournament, much better than my last success," she said. "I did better with my typing and my chipping."

Abdulghany expected to continue to improve. She does not play other sports and concentrate solely on golf. She said won't compete until the Tustin Ranch Summer Championship at Tustin Ranch Golf Club Aug. 15.

But she'll continue to train. She said she plays golf "almost every single day."

"I enjoy it," she said. "I like everything about it: the mental challenge and the physical challenge. There were a lot of mental challenges [Thursday] because I had to keep myself calm from [Wednesday]. But it worked out well."

Amy Matsuoka of Newport Beach was fourth in the girls' 12-14 division nine shots behind Abdulghany, who won the title by four strokes against Amanda Brown of Coto de Caza.

Euna Pak of Irvine won the girls' 15-18 division title, as she also finished at even 140, shooting for par 70 on both days.

Cassandra Stevenson of Costa Mesa finished 10th. She went 83-82-165. Joanna Cheng of Irvine (83-84-167) finished 11th.

Yoonju Shin of Irvine won the title in the girls' 9-11 division, which had only two players competing in two nine-hole rounds. Shin shot 19-over 89, after going 46-43.

Senior housing coming to Shorecliffs Golf Club? - Orange County ...

A piece of land once planned for a hotel or a timeshare at Shorecliffs Golf Club in San Clemente could become a site for senior housing, the City Council was informed on Tuesday evening.

Mark McGuire, a local lawyer representing the golf club property at 501 Avenida Vaquero, discussed the matter with the Council at a public hearing which resulted in a 5-0 vote the Council to approve a new set of policies Housing for the San Clemente General Plan.

McGuire said the project would include at least 20 dwellings per hectare would probably target a mix of income levels."We do not know yet," he told the Council.

It was the board approved what is known as an accommodation for the San Clemente General Plan - a set of policies and strategies to develop a mix of housing in the city that would be affordable to a wide range of income levels .

Housing policies have been proposed in the works since 2008. Now, as a fifth project, they will be sent to the California Department of Housing and Community Development for what could be a final exam.If the map of the city wins the ratification, it could help the city has proposed to develop two housing projects at below market - a 76 unit senior-citizen complex at 2350 S. El Camino Real and downtown 19 units "housing owner" apartment complex along the 100 block of Avenida Serra.

Plans for a resort hotel on the date Shorecliffs Golf Club in 1985, when a story in September, a 350-room hotel has been proposed in an agreement between the city and Forster Ranch developers. Properties Estrella had agreed in 1983 to buy and restore what was a faded, golf left and build a drainage canal through it. In return, Estrella would receive drainage-fee credits for its Forster Ranch community along with the right to build a resort hotel at the restored golf course. McGuire, asked Wednesday to elaborate about possible senior housing, said in an email that "under the current General Plan, the driving range/clubhouse site at Shorecliffs is designated for hotel or timeshare units, with a minimum of 250 rooms/units and a maximum of 500 rooms/units. ... It was originally envisioned to cover about 8.6 acres, which was the driving range, clubhouse, parking lot and practice area.
