Solving the Mobile Video Puzzle on Today's Networks

The future is now. Ready or not, the age of mobile video is upon us. Needless to say, mobile video services are creating major new opportunities for service providers worldwide. In the presence of declining revenues from voice-only subscribers, mobile video is opening up new revenue streams by increasing subscriber adoption rates of innovative applications and services like video calling, video messaging, mobile advertising, mobile TV, and more. However, mobile video is not an easy puzzle to solve. The coming influx of mobile video data will place heavier burdens on service provider networks than ever before. In addition, service providers face stringent performance requirements, multiple interoperability issues and a variety of other technical challenges.

That being said, if service providers can solve the mobile video puzzle, there is a tremendous opportunity for them to unlock profit. So how can service providers effectively create flexible, scalable mobile video applications – without spending valuable resources trying to solve these technical challenges?

Unlocking the Potential of Mobile Video

An important piece of the mobile video puzzle throughout most of the world is the Third Generation Partnership Project’s (3GPP) 3G-324M protocol. While it does not yet apply to the U.S., most mobile service providers who understand the inherent challenges of deploying low-latency video applications with high service quality in a 3G network realize that it is important to focus on solutions that incorporate this protocol. While other standards are attempting to break down the streaming video wall, the 3G-324M has become the umbrella standard for delivering real-time multimedia services over existing circuit-switched networks. Not only does it enable immediate deployment of video applications over a wide range of current handsets, it does so while requiring minimal network investment, whereas other protocols require investment in network resources and updated user handsets.

The 3G-324M protocol also provides for the multiplexing of audio, video and H.245 signaling over shared 64-kbps TDM channels — the same channels in today’s mobile networks. Within each channel, up to 42 kbps is allocated to video, up to 12.2 kbps to audio, and the remainder to signaling.

In both cases you would be referring to the same amount of data. By changing the prefix the numbers are easier to understand. This becomes even more obvious when considering that many hard drive can now store terabytes of data. It would be incomprehensible to discuss a drive which stores 2,000,000,000,000 kilobytes instead of simply 2 terabytes.

8 Bits = 1 Byte

This is where it gets complicated, there are eight bits in one byte. This means that Kb and KB are not the same thing. Kb refers to kilobits while KB signifies kilobytes, so 1KB is equal to 8Kb. This is a common confusion when discussing internet connection speeds. Many people are used to saying kilobytes and forget that the Kb in Kbps stands for kilobits.

Data Transmission

Kbps and Mbps are two abbreviations which are commonly used to discuss data transmission rates. Each is dealing with the number of bits which can be transferred per second, but one is scaled in the thousands and the other is in the millions. Kbps stands for kilobits per second while Mbps stands for megabits per second. There is no standard discussion of kilobytes per second (KBps) or megabytes per second ( MBps ) and this is due to difficulties in converting these units. Remember, there are eight bits in one byte. This means that to convert Kbps to KBps you would have to divide by eight. A simple example would be converting 8 Kbps into 1 KBps. However, more commonly measured internet speeds are 28.8Kbps, 56Kbps, 1.5Mbps, and 10Mpbs. Each of those do not convert to KBps or MBps very easily.

I’ve explained Kbps and Mbps so you now have a strong foundation for understanding these terms. The next step is to pull the rug out from under you and explain when these rules change. There are two competing interpretations of the Greek and Latin prefixes described in the first section above. Traditionally, these terms have been used in the base ten number system (the numbers 0 – 10 that we typically use when counting).
